For those of us in first world countries, $60 is not really a lot of
money. What can you buy for $60? Barely a week’s petrol for your car? Or
a concert ticket for a has-been star? Or perhaps an expensive haircut?
For a group of cycling enthusiasts, every $60 is a chance to help get a
kid to school – literally.
In the remote places of Cambodia, a school typically serves a few
villages. This means that rain or shine, students have to walk a few
kilometers to school every single day. Imagine long walks under the hot
sun with a heavy school bag. Picture the dangers that girls are exposed
to while walking long distances alone in remote areas. Yet education is
the best chance for them to break out of the poverty trap.
Wheels for HOPE
gives out bicycles to the poorer students, so that they have a means of
getting to school. Combining philanthropy with a cycling adventure, the
group incorporates each donation expedition with some fun rides for
themselves through the scenic locales of Cambodia.
Formed by cycling enthusiasts, adventure seekers and social
champions, Wheels for HOPE has completed 3 donation exercises in
Cambodia, with plans for more in the near future. Creed Cycle,
a purveyor of designer urban bicycles, has a social initiative called
ONE4ONE. With every bicycle purchased from them, Creed Cycle will donate
a bicycle to the needy through Wheels for HOPE.
You too can make a difference. Join the cause in getting kids to
schools by supporting the fundraising campaign for Wheels for HOPE,
Cycle 4.
